giffgaff APN Settings Guide

Before You Begin

Most modern phones will pick up the correct giffgaff settings automatically when you insert your SIM or eSIM. If your mobile data is not working but calls and texts are fine, the issue is almost certainly your APN (Access Point Name) settings.

Before you start, make sure: your giffgaff SIM or eSIM is activated and you have an active plan or Airtime Credit; your phone is unlocked; your phone software is up to date; and you are in an area with giffgaff (O2) network coverage.

Internet APN Settings (Data)

These are the settings you need to connect to the internet via mobile data:

  • APN: giffgaff.com
  • Username: gg
  • Password: p
  • Proxy: Leave blank
  • MCC: 234
  • MNC: 10
  • APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
  • APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4
  • Authentication Type: PAP
💡

Important: Do not confuse the Proxy field (leave blank) with the MMS Proxy field. Putting a value in the wrong field will prevent your data from working.

MMS APN Settings (Picture Messages)

Some phones handle data and MMS in a single APN, whilst others require two separate entries. If your phone uses separate APNs, create a second one with these values:

  • APN: giffgaff.com
  • Username: Leave blank
  • Password: Leave blank
  • Server: http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002
  • MMSC: http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002
  • MMS Proxy: Leave blank
  • MMS Port: Leave blank
  • MCC: 234 / MNC: 10
  • APN Type: mms (only set this when creating a separate MMS-only entry)

MMS will not work unless your mobile data toggle is switched on.

How to Set Up APN on Android

Automatic: Most Android phones detect giffgaff settings automatically. Go to Settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names and select giffgaff from the list.

Manual setup:

1

Open Settings > Connections (or Network & Internet) > Mobile Networks.

2

Tap Access Point Names (APNs).

3

Tap the + icon or three-dot menu and select New APN.

4

Enter all the values from the Internet APN Settings above.

5

Tap the three-dot menu and select Save.

6

Select the new giffgaff APN as your active access point.

7

Restart your phone.

Android tip: If you do not tap the three-dot menu and press Save, your new APN will not be kept. This is the most common reason manual setup fails.

How to Set Up APN on iPhone / iPad

Automatic: iPhones running iOS 7 or above should receive a notification to install the giffgaff carrier profile. If not, go to Settings > General > About and wait for the carrier update prompt.

Manual carrier profile: Connect to Wi-Fi, open Safari and go to https://www.giffgaff.com/iphone-app/giffgaff-apn-settings.mobileconfig — download and install when prompted, then restart.

Manual APN editing: Go to Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data Network. Enter the Internet APN values, scroll down to MMS and enter those values. Toggle Mobile Data off and on to apply.

The carrier profile link must be opened in Safari — other browsers cannot install carrier profiles on iOS.

Dual SIM Phones: Extra Steps

If you are using a dual SIM phone, complete these additional steps after setting up the APN:

1

Create and save the giffgaff APN.

2

Go to Settings > SIM Cards and set your giffgaff SIM as the preferred SIM for Mobile Data.

3

Go to Settings > Data Usage, select the tab for your giffgaff SIM, and make sure Mobile Data is switched on.

All three steps are required. If you skip the SIM preference or data toggle steps, your phone may try to use the other SIM for data.

eSIM Users: What You Need to Know

If you are using a giffgaff eSIM, the APN settings should be configured automatically during activation.

If your data is not working after eSIM activation, follow the same steps above for your device type to check and correct the APN.

To switch from physical SIM to eSIM: open the giffgaff app and go to Account > SIM > Replace my SIM > Switch to a new eSIM. APN settings update automatically.

If data stops working after the switch, try restarting your phone first. If that doesn't help, remove and re-download the eSIM profile.

Troubleshooting: Data Still Not Working?

1

Restart your phone.

2

Check that mobile data is switched on in Settings.

3

Toggle Aeroplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off again.

4

Confirm you have an active plan or Airtime Credit.

5

Delete old or duplicate APN entries.

6

Reset network settings (last resort — this erases saved Wi-Fi passwords).

7

Check for network issues at the giffgaff community or O2 service status page.

8

Make sure VoLTE is enabled — with 3G switched off, VoLTE is essential for calls over 4G.

Important Notes for 2026

3G network shutdown: The O2 3G network has been fully switched off. If your phone only supports 3G, you will not be able to use mobile data. We strongly recommend enabling VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling.

Outdated APN credentials: Some older guides still show Username: giffgaff with a blank password. The current official settings are Username: gg and Password: p.

If in doubt, always check the official giffgaff help page at help.giffgaff.com for the latest APN settings.
