giffgaff PUK Code Guide

What Is a PUK Code?

PUK stands for Personal Unlocking Key. It is an 8-digit code generated by giffgaff that you use to unblock your SIM card when it has been locked after three consecutive wrong PIN attempts.

Unlike the PIN, the PUK is fixed and cannot be changed — it is uniquely tied to your SIM card.

The PUK exists as a security measure: if your phone is lost or stolen and someone tries to guess your PIN, the SIM will block after three attempts. Only the legitimate owner who can access the giffgaff account can retrieve the PUK.

Why Is My giffgaff SIM Blocked?

1

Too many wrong PIN attempts — by far the most common cause. The default giffgaff PIN is 5555. After three wrong tries, you'll see a message asking for your PUK.

2

SIM inactive for 6 months or more — if your SIM hasn't been used for six consecutive months, it will be deactivated. The PUK will not help in this case; you'll need to order a new SIM.

3

Breach of giffgaff's terms and conditions — in rare cases, giffgaff may suspend a SIM. Contact a giffgaff agent to resolve.

How to Retrieve Your giffgaff PUK Code

1

Go to giffgaff.com/support/puk on any web browser (you'll need a different device since your phone is blocked).

2

Log in to your giffgaff account with your member name or email and password.

3

Your PUK code will be displayed on the screen. Write it down carefully.

Can't remember your giffgaff password? Click 'Forgot password?' on the login page to receive a reset link by email.

Enter the PUK on Your Blocked Phone

1

Go back to your blocked phone. The screen should be prompting you for the PUK. Type it in carefully and exactly as shown.

2

If accepted, your phone will ask you to set a new PIN — choose something memorable but not obvious.

3

Enter your new PIN twice to confirm, then restart your phone.

Your giffgaff SIM is now unblocked with a brand-new PIN.

Critical Warning: 10 Wrong PUK Attempts

If you enter the PUK incorrectly 10 times in a row, your SIM will be permanently blocked. There is no way to recover it.

You will need to order a replacement SIM from giffgaff and transfer your number over using a PAC code.

If you are on the last few attempts and unsure, stop and go back to giffgaff.com/support/puk to confirm the code. PUK codes are digits only — watch for commonly-confused characters like 0 (zero) and O (letter).

How to Avoid Getting Blocked in the Future

  • Know your PIN: if you've never changed it, it is 5555. If you did change it, keep a written reminder in a safe place.
  • Don't keep guessing: if you enter the PIN wrongly twice, stop and check.
  • Use your SIM regularly: at least once every few months to avoid the 6-month inactivity block.
  • Don't share your SIM: handing the phone to someone who doesn't know your PIN is the most common cause of accidental blocks.
  • Consider turning off the SIM lock: if your phone has a screen lock or biometrics, the SIM PIN may be redundant.
