giffgaff PIN Code Guide
The Default giffgaff SIM PIN Is 5555
If your phone has just asked you to enter a SIM PIN and you have never changed it, the answer is 5555. This is the default PIN that giffgaff sets on every SIM card.
We strongly recommend that you change it to something only you know for better security.
What Is a SIM PIN Code?
A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a 4-digit numerical password that protects your SIM card from unauthorised use. Each time your phone is switched on, you will be prompted to enter the PIN before the SIM can connect to the network.
The PIN is tied to the SIM card, not to your phone. If you swap your SIM into a different device, the same PIN will still be required.
Both the PIN and the PUK codes are supplied by giffgaff, but only the PIN can be changed. The PUK is fixed and used only when your SIM gets blocked after three wrong PIN attempts.
Why Setting a SIM PIN Matters
- Protection if your phone is lost or stolen: Nobody can use your giffgaff SIM without the PIN.
- Stops unauthorised calls or data use: Especially useful if you suspect your SIM has been handled by someone else.
- Prevents sudden bill surprises: If you are on an airtime-credit basis, no one can eat through your balance.
- Keeps your personal data safer: Texts, voicemail and call history remain protected behind the PIN lock.
How to Change Your PIN on Android
Open Settings on your phone.
Go to Security or Biometrics and security.
Tap 'SIM card lock' or 'Other security settings'.
Select 'Change SIM PIN'. Enter your current PIN (5555 if never changed), then enter your new PIN twice to confirm.
Restart your phone to apply the new PIN.
How to Change Your PIN on iPhone
Open Settings.
Tap 'Mobile Service' (or 'Cellular' on older iOS versions).
Scroll down and tap 'SIM PIN'.
Make sure the SIM PIN switch is turned on, then tap 'Change PIN'.
Enter your current PIN (5555 by default), followed by your new PIN, entered twice to confirm.
Restart your iPhone.
Pick something memorable but not obvious: avoid sequences like 0000, 1234 or 1111, and steer clear of birthdays or phone number endings.
What Happens If You Enter the PIN Incorrectly?
After three consecutive wrong PIN attempts, your SIM will be blocked as a security measure. When this happens, you will need your PUK code (Personal Unlocking Key) to unblock it.
The PUK is an 8-digit code supplied by giffgaff. You can retrieve yours by logging in to your giffgaff account at giffgaff.com/support/puk.
Very important: If you enter the PUK incorrectly 10 times in a row, your SIM will be permanently blocked and you will need to order a replacement from giffgaff.
What Is PIN2 and PUK2?
PIN2 and PUK2 are secondary codes used to protect specific advanced functions on your SIM, such as call-barring restrictions or fixed dialling numbers. Most giffgaff members will never need them.
Default PIN: 5555. Default PIN2: 6666. PUK and PUK2 must be requested from giffgaff.
If you accidentally enter PIN2 wrongly three times, you will be asked for a PUK2 code, which must be requested from giffgaff's network support team and can take up to 5 working days.
